Hugh Sullivan - one of Pitch Black's founding partners who has a day job with an oil trading company - assures that all the clearances needed for the film screenings have been worked out.
Mr Sullivan is aware that easy income for the cafe will come from renting it out for private parties and screenings of commercial movies, but is firm that the programme will be a balanced one that supports local arts and non-mainstream cinema. He has a special sympathy for the arts as he plays viola with the string quartet 4Play and has experienced the shortage of venues for open rehearsals or book readings.
To create such a chill, alternative venue, Haji Lane is ideal as 'it is a self-generated area; it doesn't have the manufactured feel of, say, Bugis and I can see it grow into a cool place to hang out'.
If visual arts are one aspect of Pitch Black's offerings, they are the primary focus of The Coffee Connoisseur (TCC)'s art programme.
