Another new entrant into the art + food cafe culture is Pitch Black, newly opened on a tiny lane in Arab town that's crammed with an eclectic array of offerings from fashion to shisha pipes. To this mixture on Haji Lane, Pitch Black adds a venue that is both industrial themed cafe downstairs and film theatre/art gallery upstairs.
The heart of Pitch Black is this upstairs space with a cozy arrangement of sofas that mimics a raked cinema hall effect and seats 20 comfortably; the blue-ray technology that makes the movie being shown - The House of Flying Daggers - positively leap out of the screen; and the versatile walls where curtains can be drawn for good acoustics or parted to reveal space for hanging paintings. Undeclared Existence, a solo by Indonesian-born Susan Olij, will be the debut show here later this month. Outside the theatre, a chill-out area is being put together with cane chairs, cushions and rugs.

Movies at Pitch Black

Apart from movie munchies - popcorn, nachos - there will also be a changing range of high quality easy-to-eat food, such as sandwiches with good bread and steak pies. Prices will be kept reasonable with wine at $10 a glass or a rum-and-coke for $9, and the Tuesday to Sunday movie screenings at $7/$8.
